This was the first clothing item I have made in my first year of Fashion Tailor at Zadkine. It's a simple black kimono with colourful patches on the front, back, pockets and sleeves. Additionally, these elements are embroidered over using Japanese traditonal mending techique Sashiko and large cross-stitching.
In class we were given an assignment to research history of kimonos and use it as an inspiration for the kimonos we were going to make in atelier classes. What I have picked up from my research is a simple, yet intricate sewing and mending technique called Sashiko and I based the design of my kimono around it. Also, I wanted to incorporate some Ukrainian influences into the design and so I added some cross-stitch embroidery around the sleeves. My teacher from atelier classes was so impressed by my work, she asked me to display it on several Open Door Days at Zadkine.
