Unlimited

This is a school project I am currently working on. The theme is Unlimited. Freedom to be yourself, space, universe and god-like powers are some of the meanings for me. Through this work, I hope to demonstrate the power of my creativity and how boundless my imagination is. The reason I only have the construction plan of my project and not the crocheted elements I am going to add is because I will come up with them in the process.

Concept

In the beginning, I thought about what events in my life had touched me or what spoke to me most. Ultimately, I decided to write a paper about my life experience in the Netherlands.
The concept is: in a more tolerant and accepting society, such as in the Netherlands, a person's creativity and imagination becomes limitless and infinite. In the environment where he/she feels free to be himself, his/her entire inner universe can emerge.

Brainstorming

I have created a word web with all the concepts that come to mind when I think of this word.
Afterwards I selected a number of concepts from the word web that could describe my idea about unlimited freedom of self-expression.

Selected concepts are: Freedom, (freedom) to be yourself, space, infinity and divine powers. I made a number of sketches of that.

This is it!

Here is the final sketch: This dress consists of two parts: the top and the long skirt. The top goes around the neck and with a mandala pattern runs to the iron hoop.
The long skirt consists of a large and a small hoop, which are connected with strings. These strings divide the skirt into several squares, which are filled in with crochet.
I intended to fill in these squares with different ornaments.

There will be a crown on the head, which is also crocheted and reinforced with the gelatin solution.

The process of making skirt

I made a waistband.
Afterwards I crocheted the edges of the small and large hoops.
Then I put everything together with the chain stitch chains (with thin thread crocheted in) according to my sketches.

The filling

I filled in four sectors of the top of the skirt with vertical chains.
I did the same for the bottom sectors in between, in a chess order.

Ornaments

To fill in the remaining sectors, I looked for interesting crochet patterns and according to them made many ornaments with different types of yarn.
To secure my decorations to it, I sewed a fine mesh fabric.
Then I pinned all the elements to the net fabric and sewed them in place.

The crown

For the crown I first made a dark blue base with a thin white line on it and following the crochet pattern I made the first layer with the white lace line.
I then rinsed the crown and remaining stars in a gelatin solution and let it dry.
After everything dried out, I sewed the stars to the back of the crown as the top layer of the crown.
